Each year the J. Frank Barefield Jr. College of Arts & Sciences awards approximately 2,000 scholarships, totaling more than $3.3 million in support for undergraduate and graduate students.

Scholarship Application Process / Award Notification for Current Graduate and Undergraduate Students

The Barefield College of Arts & Sciences awards scholarships to entering freshmen, current undergraduate students, and graduate students. Scholarships are given based on merit and/or need. For a majority of Barefield College scholarships, the GPA requirement is 3.00.

It is important that students applying for scholarships keep a record of their academic achievements, leadership positions, campus involvement, and work experiences so that they can thoroughly complete the General Scholarship Application and the Barefield College Scholarship Application.

The Barefield College Scholarship Application can be found in myBama. Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Log in to myBama.
  2. Select the Admissions & Scholarships page.
  3. Locate the Scholarships section.
  4. Under “All Graduate/Undergraduate Students,” click “Alabama Scholarship Award Manager.”
  5. Log into the “Alabama Scholarship Award Manager” using your Crimson email and myBama password.
  6. Thoroughly complete and submit any available applications (General, Barefield / your department) and recommended opportunities.

The application deadline for 2026-2027 scholarships is March 2, 2026.

Scholarship notifications will be sent out by May 31, 2026. Only students receiving a scholarship will be notified.

Scholarship recipients are expected to submit a thank you note to the donor who made your scholarship award possible. A thank you note (and optional photo upload) will be submitted through the Alabama Scholarship Award Manager before scholarship funding is released to the student account.

Scholarship Renewal for Current Students

Most Barefield Scholarships are renewal based on continued academic excellence. However, scholarship renewal is not automatic. If you have been awarded a scholarship and wish to renew for the next academic year, you must submit an updated scholarship application annually through the Alabama Scholarship Award Manager.

For a majority of Barefield College scholarships, the GPA requirement is 3.00. If your grade point average drops below the minimum qualification for your scholarship for two consecutive semesters, then you will lose the scholarship. You are eligible to reapply the following year if grades improve.

Scholarship Application Process / Award Notification for Entering Freshmen

UA’s general scholarship application is incorporated into the admissions application. Once students are accepted to UA, they will receive more information about how to apply for additional scholarship opportunities in the Alabama Scholarship Award Manager. Scholarship notifications are typically sent to incoming freshmen by May 1.
