Biology Student Spends Summer in Italian Culinary Arts Internship
Rather than spending his summer measuring solutions and chemicals, biology major and biochemistry minor Chase Carda became a chef de partie for a bistro in Florence, Italy. Before his summer in the kitchen, Carda’s culinary experience was limited to air fryer meals, but over 150 hours in a professional kitchen led to learning advanced techniques in knife work, mise en place and fine-dining service. “I was the only chef who had not completed some form of culinary schooling,” Carda said. “Nonetheless, I was given just as much responsibility to conceptualize and execute […]
‘Buffalo Soldiers’: A History Professor’s Research on a Unique Military Figure
Bob Marley immortalized the “Buffalo Soldier” in song, but Department of History professor Dr. Andrew Huebner is shining light on that figure’s role in American military and social history. Buffalo soldiers, also called Black regulars, served in four Black regiments that Congress added to the U.S. Army in the late 1860s—the first Black men to serve in the regular standing force in American history. MLC Professor Studies Art and Monsters in Southeast Asia
In July, Dr. Safa Elnaili, an associate professor in the Department of Modern Languages & Classics, spent two weeks in Malaysia and Vietnam teaching, researching and exploring the intersection of fairytales, art and multiculturalism. Although the trip was sponsored by Elnaili’s 2026-2028 CARI Fellowship, its roots lay in the Barefield College of Arts & Sciences’ Southeast Asia Initiative’s trip to Thailand last year. As part of the delegation to Thailand, Elnaili realized Southeast Asia held promise for her research and […]
AI Meets Particle Physics in UA-Led Department of Energy Project
From UA News | High-energy physics experiments produce enough data in one second to keep a team of scientists busy for years. A University of Alabama-led research team will build an artificial intelligence tool to help sift through that flood of data, speeding up the pace of discovery so scientists can focus on the science itself. The project is a joint effort of theorists and experimentalists in particle physics and builds on existing collaborations between The University of Alabama and […]
Geological Sciences Faculty Mentors High School Student in Award-Winning Research
Within a couple months, a 10th grade Alabama student built a small-scale wetland replica in her apartment, started working in the Department of Geological Sciences Coastal Hydrology and Biogeochemistry lab and won the highest honors at the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair. Saisha Sahoo, now a junior at the Alabama School of Fine Art, reached out to Dr. Natasha Dimova, an associate professor in the Department of Geological Sciences (DGS) after reading her paper on toxic metal contamination in the Mobile […]
