Double Major vs. Dual Degree

Understanding the Difference

When planning multiple programs of study, it is important to understand the difference between a double major and a dual degree. While both options allow students to complete more than one area of study, they have different requirements and lead to different academic outcomes.

Double Major

A student completing a double major earns one degree with two majors.

Requirements & Key Information

  • Students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours.
  • Students must complete all degree requirements for both majors.
  • A minor is not required for students completing a double major.
  • Students can complete a double major in any two degree programs.

Declaring a Double Major

  • Students may declare up to two majors in myBama.
  • If an error message appears or to declare a third major, students should email the BCAS Records Team at bcasrecords@ua.edu.
  • Students should include their name, CWID, and their intended programs of study.

Dual Degree

A student completing a dual degree earns two separate degrees.

Requirements & Key Information

  • Students must complete a minimum of 150 credit hours.
  • Students must meet all degree requirements for each program.
  • Students must complete any required minor(s) for their major program unless an approved exception applies.
    • Exceptions may apply when both degrees are within BCAS.
  • Students pursuing degrees in different colleges must meet the requirements of each college.
    • Students should meet with an academic advisor in each college to ensure all requirements are being met.
  • The degrees must be two different degree types (e.g., BA degree and BS degree).

Declaring a Dual Degree

  • Students should email the BCAS Records Team at bcasrecords@ua.edu to declare a dual degree.
  • Students should include their name, CWID, and their intended programs of study.

Important Reminders

Course Overlap (“Double-Dipping”)

For both double majors and dual degrees, double-dipping between major(s) and minor(s) is not allowed.

A single course cannot be used to satisfy requirements in more than one major or minor requirement block.

Advising Students

When discussing multiple programs of study, confirm whether the student’s goal is

  • One degree with multiple majors → Double Major

OR

  • Two separate degrees → Dual Degree

The requirements, planning process, and final academic outcomes are different.

It is never too early to begin planning for a successful transition from student to graduate. Students are encouraged to download and complete the Graduation Checklist to review graduation requirements and help ensure a smooth graduation process.
