Academic Bankruptcy is complete, retroactive withdrawal from one semester by students who may have experienced personal or financial circumstances so extreme that they find it impossible to function academically at their usual level. Review the information in the Undergraduate Catalog for requirements and considerations.

Cases of academic misconduct are handled by the Dean’s Office of the college where the alleged misconduct took place. In BCAS, the Academic Integrity Coordinator will process the case.
Academic Second Opportunity (ASO) is available to students who have not attended The University of Alabama for at least three full academic years. Students must be readmitted through University Admissions and, at the beginning of their first semester back, may petition BCAS under the ASO policy.
Under ASO, previous coursework remains on the transcript but does not affect GPA. Review the Undergraduate Catalog for important considerations.

Review the information in the Undergraduate Catalog about auditing a course or electing to change a course’s grade mode to pass/fail.
To request an audit or pass/fail grade mode change, register for the course, obtain written instructor approval, and email the BCAS Records Team at bcasrecords@ua.edu with your name, CWID, course information, and approval email.
Requests must be submitted before the last day to add a class. Late requests will NOT be submitted or processed.
Students may pursue multiple majors within one degree or across degree types. It is important for students to know the difference between a double major vs. dual degree and to review the Undergraduate Catalog first.
Students may declare up to two majors in myBama. For a third major, dual degree, or registration errors, email the BCAS Records Team at bcasrecords@ua.edu with your name, CWID, and intended programs of study.
As documented in the Academic Catalog, the incomplete (“IN”) grade is nonpunitive to a student’s GPA. Only instructors can assign an “IN” grade, and they should be recorded only in exceptional cases when a student:
- Has completed a substantial portion of the course and who is otherwise passing;
- Is unable to complete a well-defined portion of a course for reasons beyond the student’s control; and
- Can complete the remaining work without repeating the course, as determined by the instructor.
When assigning an “IN” grade, University policy now expects instructors to document the arrangement using the Incomplete Grade Agreement Form.
Grades of “IN” must be resolved by the conclusion of the next regular semester (Fall or Spring), whether a student is enrolled at the University of Alabama or not, or the grade of “IN” will be changed to a punitive grade of “F.”
BCAS students requesting to add a course after the deadline must submit the Late Add Request form with instructor approval and written documentation.
Requests to change credit hours for variable-hour courses after the deadline also require the Late Add Request form and instructor approval noting the change in hours.
BCAS students requesting to withdraw after the last day to drop with a “W” must submit the Late Drop Request form and explain their extenuating circumstances. Submitting your information through this link does NOT guarantee approval.
Students suspended from BCAS may petition for reinstatement if they have extenuating circumstances.
Email BCAS Student Services at student.services@as.ua.edu to request the petition link. Submission does NOT guarantee approval. Students will receive an email regarding next steps after a decision is made.
Students requesting more than 18 credit hours must submit the Max Hour Override Request form. Students in the Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP) requesting more than 15 hours must also complete this form.
Students must meet the eligibility criteria outlined on the form to be considered for excess hours. Submitting your information through this link does NOT guarantee approval.
Students are responsible for maintaining appropriate course loads and completing enrolled courses successfully.
The University of Alabama recognizes four academic statuses: good standing, academic warning, one-term academic suspension, and indefinite academic suspension. Review the Undergraduate Catalog for more details.
